Blue Water Cafe – Frank Pabst Named Vancouver’s Chef of the Year

Vancouver, BC – Blue Water Cafe’s Executive Chef, Frank Pabst, an industry leader at one of Vancouver’s preeminent restaurants, was named ‘Chef of the Year’ from the 11th annual Georgia Straight Golden Plate Awards issue on newsstands until Thursday.

Known for consistent, captivating seafood dishes with an emphasis on environmentally sound and sustainable harvest, Pabst was declared the winner by eight well respected restaurant critics and industry experts.

Among the judges, Iron Chef Rob Feenie remarked: “What I really admire is his food is really pure. Frank doesn’t mask flavours. He’s refined in what he does. You can taste everything on the plate. He’s very much in tune with local ingredients and local suppliers. It’s for real.”

For the second year in a row, Blue Water Cafe also received the Critics’ Choice as the ‘Best Restaurant in West End/Downtown/Yaletown’. “They really capture the essence of what the region, but also the neighbourhood, is about,” said judge Jim Tobler in the issue. “‘It also has destination status’, he added, mentioning a much-travelled out-of-towner he met recently who called it one of the three best restaurants in North America.”

Not to be outdone, Blue Water Cafe’s sister restaurants Araxi, West and CinCin also received top honours in the Readers’ Choice category. Araxi was voted ‘Best Restaurant in Whistler’, West was recognized with the awards for ‘Best Service’and ‘Best Overall’ restaurant, and CinCin placed second for both ‘Best Italian’ and‘Best Mediterranean’.
